"Apple Blossoms"

"Apple Blossoms"  20 x 16 oil on linen

From back in spring, here is a still-life of apple blossoms from my garden.  When I finished this piece, I thought that I had totally missed the subject.  So, I turned it face in towards the wall, way in the studio corner, and just left it, actually forgetting all about it.  After I recently found it  again and took another look, maybe I didn't miss the subject by too far after all.  Sometimes it's really hard to be objective about a painting, especially when you have just exited its "furnace of creation."  On pieces that I feel unsure of, I've learned that letting them sit and percolate, out of sight, nearly always produces something when seen them again with a fresh eye.  Moral of the story, "don't throw that painting out just yet!"

"Dunn's Rock Afternoon"

"Dunn's Rock Afternoon"  11 x 14 oil on panel  SOLD

Autumn always seems to go by far too quickly, here's a recent painting from one of my favorite locations west of Asheville.  This prominent rock outcropping has always fascinated me, and catching it with the afternoon sun of early November was just too irresistible not to try and capture.

Franklin Paint-Out

Artists hard at work!
This past weekend, Jon Houglum www.houglumfineart.com organized a very well attended paint-out in Franklin, NC.  The weather was absolutely spectacular, as you can see in this photo, and we all gathered around the old Penland Farm, where there was plenty to paint!

"October Fields"  oil on linen  14" x 18"
Here is a vista near the farm that I just couldn't resist.  Late afternoon light with the first touches of Autumn was more than enough to inspire.

"Penland's Farm"  oil on panel  11" x 14"
I was in Franklin back in July, so here is an early summer version of "Penlands Farm".

"Misty River Morning"

"Misty River Morning"  oil on canvas  18" x 24"

Not far from my studio is the French Broad River, and this is a view as it slowly making its' way towards Marshall, NC.  This painting was done in the early morning, and there was a softness to the light and slight fog, which really gave it a nice atmospheric perspective.

"Blue Notes"

"Blue Notes" 11" x 14" oil on panel

I've been enjoying taking some favorite props and developing a few still life paintings recently.  The beautiful porcelin cup and saucer provided just the right amount of complimentary colors to make this composition in blue work.

"East Fork Falls"

"East Fork Falls" 18" x 18" oil on panel

Just spent a week in Brevard, NC, also known as "The Land of Waterfalls." There are so many obscure waterfalls that are off the beaten path, and here's one that's located on one of the most beautiful rivers in the area.

"Summer On Rich Mountain"

"Summer on Rich Mountain" 8 x 10 oil on panel

With Looking Glass Rock just visible in the distance, this view from high atop Rich Mountain was exhilirating to do. Though it was a secluded spot, there was an occasional car or truck that passed, throwing up clouds of dust... my painting is a bit gritty, but that's one of the delightful (NOT!) aspects of painting on location!

Asheville Citizen-Times: Portfolio

"The Problem Solvers" oil on panel 16" x 20"

This group of workers, seemingly perplexed by what's in the hole, really caught my eye. The arrangement of lights and darks and those vivid colors made for an interesting arrangement. It's also featured in my profile in the January 11th edition of the Asheville Citizen-Times newspaper. To read the full article, click on the link below! Happy New Year to all, and thanks for following my blog!

"River Bank Morning"

"River Bank Morning" oil on panel 20" x 24"

This painting was done on the banks of the river that borders the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. It was a glorious morning, and what intrigued me was the effect of the warm morning light surrounded by the coolness of the early day. This painting is also featured at The Crescent Gallery in Spartanburg, SC.
