Morning In The Italian Garden II - Studio Version
"Morning In The Italian Garden II oil on panel 20" x 24"
After a plein-air painting done in early September, I was inspired to use it as my jumping-off point for this larger studio version. I feel that I captured the misty morning mood from the plein-air painting while then letting this piece go where it wanted.

Franklin Paint-Out
Artists hard at work!
This past weekend, Jon Houglum www.houglumfineart.com organized a very well attended paint-out in Franklin, NC. The weather was absolutely spectacular, as you can see in this photo, and we all gathered around the old Penland Farm, where there was plenty to paint!
"October Fields" oil on linen 14" x 18"
Here is a vista near the farm that I just couldn't resist. Late afternoon light with the first touches of Autumn was more than enough to inspire.
"Penland's Farm" oil on panel 11" x 14"
I was in Franklin back in July, so here is an early summer version of "Penlands Farm".

"Morning Stroll In The Italian Garden"
"Morning Stroll In The Italian Garden" 11" x 14" oil on panel
Early morning mist was well on its' way to making this painting overly gray, until an amazing ray of light broke through giving this piece just what it needed for extra interest. When these fleeting moments appear, we just have to grab them and go!

"Misty River Morning"
"Misty River Morning" oil on canvas 18" x 24"
Not far from my studio is the French Broad River, and this is a view as it slowly making its' way towards Marshall, NC. This painting was done in the early morning, and there was a softness to the light and slight fog, which really gave it a nice atmospheric perspective.

"Garden Pearls"
"Garden Pearls" oil on panel 11" x 14"
This painting, which is more or less a composition in white, was great fun to paint. The shimmering pearl onions are shown with a bouquet of "Cherokee Roses" from my garden. This painting will also be featured in my upcoming one-man show July 17th at 16 Patton Fine Art Gallery in Asheville, NC.

"Blue Notes"
"Blue Notes" 11" x 14" oil on panel
I've been enjoying taking some favorite props and developing a few still life paintings recently. The beautiful porcelin cup and saucer provided just the right amount of complimentary colors to make this composition in blue work.

"Afternoon Grazers"
I've sketched and photographed this farm in all sorts of weather, summer through winter. This view always seemed lacking, but when I caught these "grazers", it made the subject into a real story.

"Beaver Lake Winter"
Winter has certainly given landscape painters a lot of subject matter this year. Here is a little painting of the creek feeding Beaver Lake. What really caught my eye in this was the richness of the reflections and the contrasts with the surrounding snow. Lots of fun!
