"Apple Blossoms"
"Apple Blossoms" 20 x 16 oil on linen
From back in spring, here is a still-life of apple blossoms from my garden. When I finished this piece, I thought that I had totally missed the subject. So, I turned it face in towards the wall, way in the studio corner, and just left it, actually forgetting all about it. After I recently found it again and took another look, maybe I didn't miss the subject by too far after all. Sometimes it's really hard to be objective about a painting, especially when you have just exited its "furnace of creation." On pieces that I feel unsure of, I've learned that letting them sit and percolate, out of sight, nearly always produces something when seen them again with a fresh eye. Moral of the story, "don't throw that painting out just yet!"

"Dunn's Rock Afternoon"
"Dunn's Rock Afternoon" 11 x 14 oil on panel SOLD
Autumn always seems to go by far too quickly, here's a recent painting from one of my favorite locations west of Asheville. This prominent rock outcropping has always fascinated me, and catching it with the afternoon sun of early November was just too irresistible not to try and capture.

Lemons with Amber Bottle
"lemons with Amber Bottle" 12 x 16 oil on panel - Available
Here's another installment in the "still-life" department. A couple of years ago, I found this old amber bottle in an antique shop, and after pairing it with some lemons and a branch of oncidium orchids, I felt that I had the makings of a nice harmony.

"Ridgeview Autumn"
"Ridgeview Autumn"
Hard to believe that Autumn has arrived, once again, and is already slipping past. Here's a plein air study from a ridge close to my studio... the cows chilling in the shadows were great fun!

St George Island Sunset
"St George Island Sunset" 20 x 24 oil on panel SOLD
Another addition from my painting adventures on the gulf coast... here's a sunset, done from my plein air study. Mosquitos were very hungry when I was there on location, was nice not to have to swat anything here in the studio while painting this version!

"St. George Island Sunrise"
Just spent a great week on the Gulf Coast of Florida, painting with fellow members of The Plein Air Painters Of The Southeast (PAP-SE). http://pap-se.com/ I ended up staying in the St. George Island State Park, a magnificient and quite isolated park, some 9 miles long! Here is a my plein air study of the rising sun, which only lasted a moment!

"August In The Italian Garden"
August is a wonderful month for the spectacular Italian garden at George Vanderbilt's home. While on location, Tyree Purvis shot this photo of me working on a quick color study.

"Beryl's Parting Glory"
"Beryl's Parting Glory" oil on panel 12" x 12"
Tropical storm "Beryl" caused me to delay my recent trip to Charleston, where I participated along with other members of PAP-SE (Plein Air Painters of the Southeast) during our paintout and opening exhibition. It was nearing sunset when I caught this view of the remnants of the storm, which was breathtaking and truly the storm's parting glory!

"Kirkpatrick's Valley"
"Kirkpatrick's Valley" oil on panel 10.5" x 14"
Using my plein air study for reference, here's my studio version of this farm scene, located in an absolutely gorgeous vallery near Asheville. It's not often that I find a subject that is near perfect "as is", but this scene needed almost no editing to create what I think is an effective composition.
