"Beryl's Parting Glory"

"Beryl's Parting Glory" oil on panel 12" x 12"

Tropical storm "Beryl" caused me to delay my recent trip to Charleston, where I participated along with other members of PAP-SE (Plein Air Painters of the Southeast) during our paintout and opening exhibition.  It was nearing sunset when I caught this view of the remnants of the storm, which was breathtaking and truly the storm's parting glory!

"Kirkpatrick's Valley"

"Kirkpatrick's Valley" oil on panel  10.5" x 14"

Using my plein air study for reference, here's my studio version of this farm scene, located in an absolutely gorgeous vallery near Asheville.  It's not often that I find a subject that is near perfect "as is", but this scene needed almost no editing to create what I think is an effective composition.

"Still Life with Mandarins"

"Still Life with Mandarins"  oil on panel  11" x 14"

One more still life painting, painted during convalescence from my awful knee injury back in December.  I sure hope to soon be back on two legs again!  This painting was lots of fun!

"Cup and Plum"

"Cup and Plum" oil on panel 8" x 10"

Here's one of my late winter efforts working with still life, which I love doing. This wonderful Bavarian porcelain cup married nicely with the plum, and the blossoms are inspired by the red leaf plum, which has just finished blooming, in my garden.

"The Golden Hour"

"The Golden Hour" oil on panel 11" x 14" SOLD
I've been waiting for an idea to use this amber bottle, and after a recent visit to the supermarket, I realized that I had just the makings of a painting that would let the bottle shine. The wonderful thing about doing a still life with veggies is that you get to eat them when you're done!

October is absolutely my favorite time of the year for visiting the coastal areas of the southeast. Here's a little plein-air painting of a shrimp boat in the late afternoon light, "After The Catch."

Granny Smith

"Granny Smith"  oil on panel  12" x 16"

Wow, I can't believe it has been so long since my last post.  Summer was busy and here and gone way too quickly.  Fall is now here and the days are getting shorter, so hopefully I'll be back to posting on a more regular basis.  So, for my first entry for fall, here is a 12" x 16" oil on panel still life that I really enjoyed painting.  The warmth of the antique copper teapot along with the vibrant greens in the apples paired beautifully for this composition.
